This family Bible was apparently in the possession of John and Polly Witcher, and then later James and Tempy Witcher, while they homesteaded in northwestern Georgia in the early 1800s. I have looked carefully at the pages of this very old Bible and can offer a few observations.
I believe this Bible was first owned by Captain John Witcher, son of Ephraim and Betsey (Fipps) Witcher. Parts of the first pages are very worn, but careful examination reveals the name "John Witcher." This Bible was probably the Bible used in the courtrooms where this man presided as judge. It seems the Bible then passed into the possession of James and Tempy Witcher, likely after John's death on December 25th, 1847. It is my belief then that either Tempy or Susan AJ rewrote the family Bible records for the families of James and John Witcher.
After the death of James and Tempy Witcher, the Bible must have passed into the possession of Susan AJ Witcher (a daughter of James and Tempy), and then, sometime after her death, to one of Susan's children. Eventually, the Bible came into the possession of Doyle Witcher, a 2X great-grandson of James and Tempy Witcher. Special thanks to Doyle Witcher and his family for caretaking and preserving this invaluable Witcher family relic.
I have included images of this Bible in the photo gallery located at the bottom of this page.
